Why Milwaukee Homeowners Choose Hello Gravel
Milwaukee’s city population: 658,091 anchors a busy, built environment within a metro area population: 2.5+ million. With a growth rate: 0.40% annually and a lakeside location that brings temperate seasons, local homeowners face steady construction and landscaping demand. Milwaukee sees 228/year sunny days and an annual rainfall: 34.25 inches, and sits in hardiness zone: 8b—conditions that encourage year-round project planning but also require attention to drainage and soil stability. Homeowners choose quality aggregates like fill-dirt to raise low spots, backfill foundations, and prepare planting beds or hardscape bases. Reliable, locally sourced fill-dirt helps prevent settling, supports proper grading, and reduces water pooling that can damage lawns, patios, and basements in this regional climate.Popular Projects in Milwaukee This Season

Frequently Asked Questions - Milwaukee Fill Dirt Delivery
Everything you need to know about fill dirt delivery in Milwaukee.
Delivered fill-dirt in Milwaukee usually runs roughly $12 to $30 per ton, depending on supplier, material quality, distance, and minimum-load fees. Small orders can push the per-ton price higher; Hello Gravel’s minimum order is 3 tons and delivery timing or next-day requests can add fees. For an exact price, request an online quote with your zip code and delivery address.
For Milwaukee’s freeze-thaw climate and common clay soils, use low-organic, well-graded, compactable fill (clean fill-dirt) with good fines content for compaction, and add a layer of coarse granular material (crushed stone or sand) where drainage and frost protection are critical. Avoid high-organic topsoil or loam as it heaves and settles; for structural areas use engineered fill or a crushed-stone base beneath the fill. Always place fill in controlled lifts and compact to reduce frost heave risk.
Use this quick estimate based on a typical fill-dirt weight of about 1.3 tons per cubic yard: 3" = 0.012 tons per sq ft, 6" = 0.024 tons per sq ft, 12" = 0.048 tons per sq ft. That equals about 12 tons per 1,000 sq ft for 3", 24 tons for 6", and 48 tons for 12". Densities vary by source, so treat these as estimates and order a bit extra (5-10%) for compaction and settling.
Yes. Milwaukee contractors typically recommend placing fill-dirt in 6- to 8-inch lifts and mechanically compacting each lift for driveways and structural backfill, and using geotextile fabric or geogrid over soft clay subgrades to stabilize and limit mixing. For driveway bases, many pros prefer a compacted crushed-stone layer under the fill-dirt rather than relying on fill-dirt alone.
Possibly. Minor small-scale top-ups usually don’t need permits, but larger grading, change of drainage, retaining walls, work near shorelines/wetlands, or projects that affect stormwater can trigger city or county permits and erosion-control rules. Check with the City of Milwaukee Department of Neighborhood Services and Milwaukee County zoning or environmental health before large deliveries or major grade changes.
Fill-dirt is usually the least expensive material for building grade but offers poorer drainage and lower load-bearing capacity than crushed limestone or recycled concrete. Crushed limestone/recycled concrete create a stronger, well-draining base that lasts longer for driveways and requires less frequent maintenance, though it costs more up front. For a durable driveway in Milwaukee’s freeze-thaw climate, most contractors recommend a crushed stone base with occasional fill-dirt used only for leveling or raising low spots.
Hello Gravel partners with local suppliers and haulers across the Milwaukee area—suppliers typically have minimums around 3 to 5 tons and commonly deliver within a 20–50 mile radius depending on truck availability. Use Hello Gravel’s online quote tool to see exact suppliers, prices, and minimums for your zip code, or call our team for local recommendations and scheduling.
Expect to regrade and add material after spring thaw when frost heaves and washouts are visible; light-use driveways may need spot repair every 1–3 years while busier drives will need more frequent attention. When plowing, avoid scraping down to subgrade which exposes soft material; consider adding a compacted stone wearing surface to reduce winter damage and improve snowplow resilience.
Not usually. Septic drain fields require specific soils and permeability; importing random fill-dirt can clog systems and may violate local health department rules—always consult Milwaukee County Environmental Health before adding fill to a septic area. For under-slab backfill, engineered fill placed and tested by a geotechnical engineer is typically required to meet compaction and bearing specifications.
Yes—many contractors provide itemized bids that include material delivery, spreading, grading, and compaction, or they will quote labor only if you supply the material. Hello Gravel can deliver just the fill-dirt; you can note spreading requests at checkout but drivers perform tailgate spreading only at their discretion, so for guaranteed spreading and compaction hire a contractor and request a combined quote.
