Why South Ogden Homeowners Choose Hello Gravel
South Ogden homeowners are part of the greater Salt Lake City region, which has a city population of 200,361 and a metro area population of 2.5+ million. The area’s steady growth (0.80% annually), high-altitude, semi-arid geography, 222 sunny days per year, and relatively low annual rainfall (20.09 inches) drive ongoing residential and infrastructure work. That combination increases demand for reliable aggregates for grading, drainage, and foundation prep. In hardiness zone 7a, proper soil preparation matters for plantings and hardscape durability, so homeowners and contractors seek fill-dirt that compacts predictably, resists excessive settling, and supports engineered grades while meeting local municipal requirements.Popular Projects in South Ogden This Season

Frequently Asked Questions - South Ogden Fill Dirt Delivery
Everything you need to know about fill dirt delivery in South Ogden.
Delivered fill-dirt prices in the Salt Lake City metro, including South Ogden, typically range roughly from $12 to $35 per ton depending on source, distance, moisture content, and whether screening is included. Hello Gravel requires a 3-ton minimum and standard delivery is 2+ business days; next-day delivery may be available for an extra fee. Ask for a delivered quote for your zip code to get an accurate price for your specific address and amount.
South Ogden buyers should source contractor-grade fill-dirt from local landscape suppliers, regional quarries around the Salt Lake Valley, and civil-works soil suppliers that Hello Gravel partners with. Use Hello Gravel to match with nearby vendors and specify "contractor-grade" or "structural fill" in your order notes so suppliers can confirm suitability for compaction and load-bearing uses.
For structural fills in a freeze-thaw climate like South Ogden's, target 90-95% of Modified Proctor or at least 85-95% of Standard Proctor where specified by an engineer. Compact in uniform lifts (typically 4-8 inches loose thickness) using plate compactors or walk-behind rollers for small areas and vibratory drum rollers for larger areas; sheepsfoot rollers help with clayey soils. Controlling moisture is critical—too wet or too dry soils will not reach target density and will settle more through freeze-thaw cycles.
Permit requirements can vary by neighborhood and project scope, so check with South Ogden City Planning or Public Works before ordering large volumes. Projects that alter grades, affect drainage, exceed local import thresholds, or involve retaining walls may require permits or inspections; homeowners should also check HOA rules. If in doubt, contact the city and provide your intended amount and placement to get clear guidance.
True fill-dirt is typically fines-rich (more silt and sand) and is designed for filling and grading rather than structural driveway bases. For driveways you want a mix with more coarse angular material (road base or crusher run) for strength and drainage; a blended approach—engineered fill with some coarse fraction—can work for graded areas where some drainage is needed. Ask suppliers for a "structural fill" or specify the intended use so they can recommend or blend materials appropriately.
Use the rule: cubic yards = (area in sq ft * depth in inches) / 324. Fill-dirt generally weighs about 1.1 to 1.5 tons per cubic yard depending on moisture and composition, so multiply cubic yards by that range to estimate tons. Example: a 12x30 driveway (360 sq ft) filled 4 inches deep needs about 4.4 cubic yards, which is roughly 4.8 to 6.6 tons; always order a small overage (5-10%) to account for settlement and compaction.
On sloped lots, prioritize drainage and erosion control by installing swales, intercepting berms, and directing water away from foundations with a minimum 2% surface slope. Use geotextile fabric where fill is placed over soft soils, add rock check dams or riprap in high-flow areas, and consider retaining walls or terraces for steep slopes to reduce erosion. Also stabilize finished slopes with seed, mulch, or planting as appropriate and follow any local sediment-control rules during delivery and placement.
Fill-dirt is generally cheaper but contains more fines and organic matter, so it compresses and holds water—making it a poor choice for driveway bases. Crusher run and road base contain angular rock and fines sized for interlock and compaction, giving better strength, drainage, and longevity for driveways. Clean fill (screened, low-organic) is useful where you need non-organic material but usually still needs a layer of engineered base beneath traffic areas.
A driveway built on uncompacted fill-dirt typically shows problems within 1-3 years, including settlement, rutting, and drainage issues. Properly compacted and engineered fills can perform longer, but for vehicle traffic you will usually get the best longevity by using compacted road base or crusher run topped with suitable surface material. Plan for periodic regrading, topping, and addressing drainage annually or after major freeze-thaw seasons.
Yes—South Ogden neighborhoods may have narrow streets, steep driveways, overhead wires, or weight and parking restrictions that affect dump truck access and offloading. Measure gate widths, driveway slopes, and turning radii, and note any HOA or street-permit requirements when you place your Hello Gravel order. Drivers will assess safety at arrival and may refuse offloading if access is unsafe, so communicate any constraints in the Order Notes and schedule accordingly.
