Why Toronto Homeowners Choose Hello Gravel
Toronto has a city population of 420 and sits within a metro area of 993,588, a profile that points to steady, incremental development rather than a construction boom. A growth rate of 0.40% annually means demand for new projects—driveways, garden renovations, small additions—will rise gradually, so homeowners should plan for projects that prioritize durability and long-term value. With an average of 228 sunny days per year and 33.50 inches of annual rainfall, local projects need materials that handle both sun exposure and periodic wet conditions. In practice that means choosing materials and mixes suited to both drainage and heat tolerance. Whether you are ordering gravel for a driveway, topsoil for beds, sand for leveling, or mulch for water retention, quality bulk materials help reduce maintenance and extend the life of landscaping and hardscape work in this regional climate.Popular Projects in Toronto This Season

Frequently Asked Questions - Toronto Gravel Delivery
Everything you need to know about gravel delivery in Toronto.
Homeowners typically order a mix of materials such as gravel, sand, dirt, and stone for driveways, base layers, grading, and garden beds. These materials serve different roles—some provide structural support, others improve drainage or topdress beds—so choose based on the function you need rather than appearance alone. If you are unsure, use our material quiz or contact our team for guidance.
Pricing depends on the material type, quantity, distance from local suppliers, and delivery method. Hello Gravel provides upfront quotes based on your zip code and order size, so request a quote to see current rates including delivery. Remember taxes, site access issues, and optional services can change the final price.
Freeze-thaw cycles can cause frost heave, reduced compaction, and drainage issues if materials are poorly chosen or placed. For load-bearing areas choose well-graded, angular material with good drainage, and for planting beds choose mixes that shed excess water in spring thaw. Plan on seasonal inspections and maintenance because some materials settle or shift after winter.
Standard delivery times are typically 2+ business days, with next-day delivery available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. Same-day delivery may be possible in limited cases depending on local supplier and truck availability, but it is not guaranteed. We recommend scheduling ahead and checking available delivery dates at checkout.
Permit rules vary by municipality and by any local homeowners association, so check with Toronto city offices and your HOA before placing material on public streets or in curb lanes. You may need permits or traffic control for blocking a street, and some areas restrict stockpiling on sidewalks or public right-of-way. When in doubt, plan to keep deliveries on your property and confirm local rules before ordering.
A common formula is volume (cubic yards) = length (ft) x width (ft) x depth (ft) ÷ 27. For irregular areas, break the space into rectangles or estimate area and multiply by the average depth, then divide by 27 to get cubic yards. If you need tons instead of cubic yards, ask for local density estimates since a material’s weight per cubic yard varies; our online calculator can help with these conversions.
Some local suppliers or independent contractors offer spreading and installation, but availability varies and Hello Gravel’s drivers may only perform tailgate spreading at their discretion. Installation and spreading are often charged hourly or by the square foot and require a site assessment for an accurate price. If you need spreading, request it at checkout and consider hiring a local landscaping contractor for guaranteed installation.
Wet springs and winter freeze can limit where and how materials can be placed—muddy ground can prevent trucks from reaching drop zones and frozen ground may prevent proper compaction. Snow season can delay deliveries and increase lead times, while late spring often sees high demand. Plan orders for drier months when possible, or allow flexible delivery windows during seasonal transitions.
Material selection affects drainage, weed growth, compaction, and how often you need to regrade or add material. Well-draining, properly graded aggregates typically require less frequent rework, while finer fills or high-fines mixes may hold water and need more maintenance after freeze-thaw cycles. Factor in intended use, traffic loads, and maintenance willingness when choosing materials.
Ask suppliers about gradation (particle size distribution), percentage of fines, whether material is screened or washed, and general consistency. Request a sample or specification sheet when possible and note regional variations—materials reflect local geology and can differ in color and texture. Comparing these basic specs helps you match the material to the project’s functional needs rather than just appearance.
Clear an unobstructed path for trucks, mark your preferred drop location, and note overhead lines, gates, or low branches that could block access. Keep in mind typical deliveries use dump trucks (often tri-axle) and our minimum order is 3 tons, so ensure the drop zone can handle the truck weight to avoid property damage. Communicate any restrictions in the order notes and confirm delivery timing so the driver can plan the safest drop.
Match the material’s function to the project: choose load-bearing, well-graded mixes for driveways and base layers; free-draining mixes for surface drainage and plant beds; and looser fills for grading or subsoils. Think about depth required, drainage needs, and expected traffic. If you are unsure, use Hello Gravel’s material quiz or contact our team to get a recommendation based on your project goals and Toronto’s local conditions.
