Why Colorado City Homeowners Choose Hello Gravel
Colorado City is a growing community of 4,465 residents experiencing steady development at a 2.00% annually growth rate. With a climate that sees 228 sunny days/year and 34.25 inches of annual rainfall in hardiness zone 8b, homeowners face a mix of dry, sunny stretches and seasonal rains that influence soil behavior and drainage needs. That combination drives steady demand for reliable aggregates during projects like grading, driveway builds, foundation backfill, and landscape grading. Homeowners choose quality fill-dirt to create stable subgrades, prevent uneven settling, and direct stormwater away from structures—especially important where local soils and seasonal moisture cycles can compact unevenly over time.Popular Projects in Colorado City This Season

Frequently Asked Questions - Colorado City fill-dirt Delivery
Everything you need to know about fill-dirt delivery in Colorado City.
Expect roughly $12 to $35 per ton delivered for basic fill-dirt in small Arizona towns like Colorado City, depending on distance, supplier availability, and material quality. That works out to about $14 to $42 per cubic yard using a common conversion (see quantity question). Hello Gravel has a 3-ton minimum and offers standard delivery in 2+ business days; next-day delivery and spread/compaction services usually add fees.
Fill-dirt is usually mostly fines (sand, silt, clay) with occasional small gravels and caliche nodules, not crushed rock. For driveway bases you should use crushed rock or road base rather than straight fill-dirt; use fill-dirt for raising grade, backfill, and leveling where strength isn’t critical.
High heat in summer dries soil and can cause shrinkage and minor settling, while monsoon rains can cause erosion and washouts on unprotected slopes. Proper compaction, moisture conditioning before compaction, and surface protection or drainage are important to reduce settling and erosion after storms.
Small yard fills and low spots often need 3 to 10 tons (about 2 to 8 cubic yards). Driveway base projects typically need 10 to 40 tons (8 to 33 cubic yards) depending on length and thickness, and larger grading or lot-raise projects commonly range from 20 to 200+ tons. Always measure area and depth and add 5-10% for settlement and grading waste.
Northern Arizona soils often include sandy mixes, clay pockets, and caliche; these can affect drainage and compaction. Use engineered fill (specified material, compaction testing, and moisture control) for any structural work like foundations, retaining walls, or when plans call for compaction reports. Regular fill-dirt is fine for non-structural grade adjustments and landscape raises.
Contractors typically place fill in 6 to 8 inch lifts and compact each lift with a plate compactor for small areas or a vibratory roller for larger spreads. Moisture conditioning is often needed in dry Arizona conditions to achieve good density; for projects requiring proof, contractors can provide compaction testing on request.
For small landscaping fills you often do not need a permit, but any substantial grading, changes to drainage, or building pads usually require permits from Mohave County or the local building department. Homeowners should also check HOA rules if applicable, since some HOAs restrict visible bare dirt, require rock cover, or limit changes to finished grade.
Properly compacted and drained fill-dirt can last indefinitely, but surface settlement commonly occurs over months to a few years and may need topping up. In desert climates expect erosion during monsoon season, so stabilize exposed surfaces with rock, mulch, or vegetation and check low spots after heavy rain.
Yes. Delivered loose fill-dirt is the typical service and priced per ton or cubic yard; spreading and compaction are usually extra and often charged hourly or as a service fee. Hello Gravel drivers may perform tailgate spreading at their discretion when requested at checkout, but compaction is generally a separate contractor task and not guaranteed through delivery.
Contractors often quote by the ton or by the cubic yard and include mobilization, hauling, and equipment time in the price. Expect minimums, an hourly or flat fee for spreading/compaction, and extra charges for difficult access, long haul distances, or required moisture conditioning and testing.
Hello Gravel delivers by dump truck (often tri-axle), so make sure there is a clear access route, a stable place to offload, and note any overhead obstructions. Indicate preferred drop location in order notes, expect drivers to use discretion for tailgate spreading, and contact our team if your site has tight turns or special access needs.
A simple rule: measure the area (square feet) and multiply by desired depth (feet) to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 to get cubic yards. For weight planning, a typical loose fill-dirt density in Arizona is about 1.1 to 1.3 tons per cubic yard, so use about 1.2 tons/yd3 as an estimate and order 5-10% extra for settlement and waste. Use Hello Gravel’s material calculator or contact our sales team for a quick quote.
