Decomposed Granite
Known for its natural look, this compact, durable material drains well and holds up in high-traffic areas. Made from crushed and weathered granite down to a mix of fine gravel and sand—best for patios, paths, driveways, and landscape projects. Can range in color from light brown and tan to reddish and gray, depending on the natural stone color in the region.
Road Base
(Class 5 | ABC | Crusher Run) A mixture of crushed limestone or granite, gravel, and sand, ranging from 1 ½” in size down to fines (small particles). Commonly used for constructing roads, driveway bases, parking lots, and other paved and unpaved surfaces. Intended to be compacted, hence the inclusion of fines within the material to provide support and be resistant to erosion and shifting.

Frequently Asked Questions - Downtown gravel Delivery
Everything you need to know about gravel delivery in Downtown.
Prices vary by type, size, and delivery distance, but bulk material alone in the Arizona Region commonly runs about $15 to $40 per ton. With delivery and minimum-order fees factored in for Downtown, expect $30 to $80 per ton delivered; installed cost per square foot usually lands between $0.75 and $3.00 depending on depth and site prep. Exact pricing depends on your zip code, gravel type, and whether you need spreading or additional base work.
Crushed rock (angular stone) and decomposed granite (DG) perform well in Downtown because they lock together and resist shifting under heat. Pea gravel stays cool underfoot but can migrate and requires edging, while river rock is decorative and poor for driveways because it rolls and moves during monsoon flows. Choose angular crushed stone for driveways and DG or pea gravel for walkways and xeriscapes.
Use this quick rule: 1 cubic yard of gravel is about 1.3 tons; calculate cubic yards by multiplying area (sq ft) by depth (ft) and dividing by 27. Example estimates: a 12 ft x 50 ft driveway at 4 inches needs roughly 8 to 12 tons, a 12 ft x 12 ft patio at 3 inches needs about 1.5 to 2 tons, and a 100 sq ft xeriscape area at 2 inches needs about 0.8 to 1.2 tons. Add 10% to 20% for compaction, spreading waste, and settling in local soils.
Hello Gravel connects you with local suppliers and haulers that service Downtown so you don’t have to track down individual quarries. Our platform has a minimum order of 3 tons; individual local suppliers may have different minimums or delivery fees depending on distance and truck size. Enter your zip code on our site or contact our team to see which local partners are available and their specific minimums.
Rules vary by property and HOA. Some Downtown HOAs or city codes may restrict driveway surfacing, require edge restraints, or have stormwater/erosion rules; driveways that change curb cuts or alter drainage can require permits. Before ordering gravel, check your HOA guidelines and contact the City of Phoenix or local permitting office if your project affects curbs, drainage, or parking access.
Yearly maintenance typically includes raking to regrade areas, topping up 0.5 to 1 inch of gravel as it settles, removing weeds, and fixing any erosion after monsoon storms. DIY maintenance for a small yard often runs $50 to $300 per year for materials and supplies; hiring a landscaper for regrading or spot repairs can be a few hundred dollars or more depending on scope. Good edging, proper base prep, and addressing drainage reduce both maintenance needs and costs.
Gravel and crushed stone drain well and resist pooling, making them good choices for managing runoff during monsoon storms when paired with proper grading. Decomposed granite compacts into a firmer surface that resists light erosion and is popular for walkways and low-maintenance xeriscapes, though it can wash in heavy flows. Pavers offer the best long-term stability and erosion resistance for driveways and trafficked areas but cost more up front and may require a sturdier base.
For residential driveways expect a total compacted depth of 6 to 8 inches: 4 to 6 inches of compactable base stone and 2 inches of surface gravel or 3/4" crushed rock. Walkways and pedestrian paths typically need 2 to 3 inches of compacted surface over a compacted subbase. Always compact the subgrade, add geotextile where soils are soft, provide positive slope for drainage, and use edge restraints to prevent migration during monsoon flows.
Standard delivery through Hello Gravel is 2 or more business days, and during peak season (spring and before monsoon) lead times in the Arizona Region commonly extend to 3 to 7 business days. Next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee, and local suppliers may charge rush or short-notice delivery fees depending on haul distance and truck availability. We recommend ordering ahead of major landscaping seasons to avoid rush charges.
Many Downtown properties have sandy or caliche-influenced soils that drain well, but geotextile fabric is recommended wherever the native soil is loose, clayey, or shows signs of rutting to prevent mixing and washout. If your site has soft spots, slope issues, or heavy vehicle traffic, add a compacted crushed-rock base and fabric to improve stability and reduce long-term maintenance. If unsure, request a site assessment from a local contractor or ask our team for installation tips when you order.
As of today, we require 2 business days for delivery.
