Decomposed Granite
Known for its natural look, this compact, durable material drains well and holds up in high-traffic areas. Made from crushed and weathered granite down to a mix of fine gravel and sand—best for patios, paths, driveways, and landscape projects. Can range in color from light brown and tan to reddish and gray, depending on the natural stone color in the region.
Road Base
(Class 5 | ABC | Crusher Run) A mixture of crushed limestone or granite, gravel, and sand, ranging from 1 ½” in size down to fines (small particles). Commonly used for constructing roads, driveway bases, parking lots, and other paved and unpaved surfaces. Intended to be compacted, hence the inclusion of fines within the material to provide support and be resistant to erosion and shifting.

Why West Haven Homeowners Choose Hello Gravel
West Haven has a city population of 23,000 and sits inside a growing metro area of 2.5+ million, expanding at about 2.10% annually. That steady growth is fueling residential and small-scale commercial construction, from new driveways and patios to home additions and utility trenches. West Haven’s climate—USDA hardiness zone 8b with 228 sunny days per year and 34.32 inches of annual rainfall—creates a long landscaping season but also means projects must handle occasional heavy downpours and long, sunny stretches. Homeowners here look for reliable aggregates that balance drainage, stability, and low maintenance. Gravel is a common choice because it helps manage runoff, reduces mud, and provides a durable surface for paths, driveways, and base layers under pavers.Popular Projects in West Haven This Season

Frequently Asked Questions - West Haven gravel Delivery
Everything you need to know about gravel delivery in West Haven.
Material costs in the West Haven area commonly range from about $20 to $40 per ton delivered, depending on type (pea gravel, crushed rock, DG, etc.) and availability. Hello Gravel has a 3-ton minimum; concrete installation alternatives usually cost more up front. Expect professional installation (grading, base, and compaction) for a driveway to add several hundred to a few thousand dollars depending on size and site prep—get local quotes for firm prices.
Local suppliers commonly stock pea gravel, 3/4" crushed rock, decomposed granite (DG), crusher run (road base), and river rock in regionally available colors. Because Hello Gravel sources regionally, color and texture will reflect Weber County geology, so expect variations in shade and angularity. Ask for a photo or sample if color/texture is important for your project.
West Haven has cold winters with snow and freeze-thaw cycles plus relatively dry, arid summers, so choose materials and construction that handle both. Angular crushed stone and a well-compacted crusher run base resist shifting from freeze-thaw and vehicle traffic better than loose round pea gravel. Good drainage and edging are important to prevent washout during spring snowmelt.
These are typical estimates for a finished gravel build with a compacted base: 1-car driveway (10'x20'): about 4-6 tons total; 2-car driveway (20'x20'): about 9-11 tons total; garden path (3'x50') at 2" depth: about 1-2 tons; 12'x12' patio at 2" depth: about 1-2 tons. Quantities vary by desired depth, base thickness, and gravel density—use Hello Gravel’s calculator or request a quote for exact amounts.
Yes. Many West Haven HOAs and some city ordinances have rules about front-yard surfacing, visible loose rock, and driveway aprons; some HOAs restrict loose gravel or require specific colors and edging. Before ordering, check your HOA covenants and call West Haven City Planning or public works to confirm any driveway or drainage permits and local standards.
A compacted crusher run base with 2-3" of angular crushed rock or DG on top tends to be lowest maintenance and resists migration. Installing geotextile fabric under the base, plus proper edging and a compacted base, greatly reduces weeds and movement. Pea gravel drains well but migrates and needs more frequent top-ups, so it is less low-maintenance in driveways.
Gravel is typically the lowest-cost up-front option per square foot, with asphalt and concrete costing more and pavers usually being the most expensive. Gravel has ongoing maintenance costs (periodic top-up and edging) while hard surfaces require less frequent but higher-cost repairs. For an apples-to-apples estimate for your property, request local installation quotes since site prep and drainage can shift total costs significantly.
For most West Haven driveways, install a geotextile fabric, then 4-6" of compacted crusher run or road base in 2-3" lifts with mechanical compaction, and finish with 2-3" of top gravel. For heavier loads or parking pads increase base to 6-8". Proper slope and drainage away from structures are essential to prevent frost heave and washouts during spring melt.
Angular crushed rock (3/4") or compacted crusher run holds up better to snow shovels and plows because the pieces lock together and are less likely to be scooped away. Pea gravel and round river rock are easily displaced by plows and snowblowers and generally are not recommended for driveways where mechanical snow removal is common. Use edging and mark edges clearly to avoid damaging edges during plowing.
