Why Houston Homeowners Choose Hello Gravel
Houston homeowners are working in a changing market: the city has a population of 1,490 and sits inside a metro area of 2.5+ million that is growing at a rate of 1.20% annually. Local climate and geography drive demand for dependable site work—Houston averages 34.25 inches of rain per year, sees 228 sunny days annually, and falls in hardiness zone 8b—so projects must handle heavy wet seasons and rapid vegetation growth. That combination increases the need for reliable grading, raised pads, and stable backfill for driveways, patios, and utility trenches. Many homeowners aren’t familiar with aggregate terminology, so they look for straightforward guidance on choosing compactable, low-organic fill that reduces settling and erosion while simplifying project logistics.Popular Projects in Houston This Season

Frequently Asked Questions - Houston Fill Dirt Delivery
Everything you need to know about fill dirt delivery in Houston.
Homeowners in Houston typically pay roughly $12 to $35 per ton for delivered fill-dirt, depending on local supply and haul distance, with a 3-ton minimum. Tailgate spreading is offered at the driver's discretion and often costs an extra $75 to $200 depending on job size and access. Hello Gravel shows final pricing at checkout and can quote spreading fees when you request the service.
For raising grade in West Arkansas, choose clean fill-dirt that is low in organic matter and free of large debris or trash; this reduces future settling and vegetation growth. For driveway bases, contractors prefer a granular structural fill or crusher-run material on top of compacted fill-dirt, because pure fill-dirt does not provide a durable driving surface in clay soils. Mention your clay-soil concerns in Order Notes so suppliers can match local materials.
As a rule of thumb, 3 inches of fill over 1,000 sq ft is about 10 to 12 tons of fill-dirt, while 6 inches is about 20 to 24 tons. Actual tonnage depends on the material's moisture and density, so treat these as estimates and use our material calculator or ask Hello Gravel for a local density adjustment. Remember Hello Gravel minimum orders start at 3 tons.
Hello Gravel's standard delivery window is 2+ business days, and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. Same-day delivery and spreading are sometimes possible but depend on local supplier and hauler availability, truck size, and access—expect higher fees if available. Delivery fees vary by distance and site access; some local routes offer free delivery while remote or difficult sites may incur additional charges.
Fill-dirt can help by raising low spots and creating a slope to encourage runoff, but Arkansas clay holds water and can limit infiltration. For meaningful drainage improvement, pair fill-dirt with solutions like a drainage layer of crushed stone, a buried perforated pipe (French drain), swales, or geotextile fabric. If poor drainage is a recurring issue in Houston, consult a local contractor before relying on fill alone.
Fill-dirt used to raise grade or backfill will settle most during the first few months and continue slowly for a year; plan to check and add more material if needed after initial settlement. As a wearing surface, fill-dirt is not recommended; driveways covered with proper stone may need top dressing every 1 to 5 years depending on traffic and weather. Regular maintenance after heavy rains helps prevent erosion, especially on clay soils common in West Arkansas.
Crusher run or crushed stone is a better base and surfacing material for driveways because it compacts well, sheds water, and resists rutting. Fill-dirt is best used to build up low areas or as non-structural backfill; it should be compacted and then covered with crusher run if the area will bear vehicles. For long-lasting driveways in clay soils, most contractors use both: fill-dirt to adjust grade and crusher run as the structural layer and surface.
For most small to medium deliveries to private property in Houston, no city permit is typically required, but rules can vary by county and HOA. Check with local city or county public works and your HOA before large or repeated deliveries, especially if trucks will park on or cross public roads or if you need offloading in the right-of-way. Tell Hello Gravel about narrow drives, bridges, or restrictive neighborhoods so we can match an appropriate truck and let you know about any additional steps.
Contractors usually remove topsoil and organic material, proof-roll the subgrade, and place fill-dirt in 4- to 6-inch lifts, compacting each lift with a plate compactor or roller to achieve the required density. For structural slabs or heavy loads, many pros prefer engineered structural fill or a crushed stone base instead of loose fill-dirt, and they recommend moisture control and a compaction test if the slab is structural. Ask your contractor or Hello Gravel for material recommendations based on your specific slab plans and local soil conditions.
Fill-dirt can be part of an erosion-control plan but is rarely sufficient alone on slopes; it can stabilize small low spots but will erode on steep grades unless protected. Combine fill-dirt with measures like geotextile fabric, terraces or retaining walls, erosion-control blankets, and vegetation to hold soil in place. For longer slopes or areas with heavy runoff in Houston's climate, consult a landscaper or civil contractor to design the right combination of fill and erosion controls.
