Why Grand Forks Homeowners Choose Hello Gravel
Grand Forks, home to 48,107 residents, is experiencing modest but steady demand for residential and small-scale commercial projects driven by a 0.40% annual growth rate. That steady growth supports ongoing renovations, landscaping updates, and infill construction rather than a large building boom—meaning homeowners are often planning targeted projects like driveway repairs, yard regrading, and garden overhauls. The local climate and geography—about 228 sunny days per year and 34.32 inches of annual rainfall in USDA hardiness zone 8b—create a need for materials that balance drainage, freeze-thaw durability, and plant support. In practice, homeowners benefit from well-graded fills, drainage-friendly aggregates, stable base materials, and quality soils and mulches that together reduce erosion, support foundations, and help plants thrive through wet springs and sunny summers.Popular Projects in Grand Forks This Season

Frequently Asked Questions - Grand Forks Gravel Delivery
Everything you need to know about gravel delivery in Grand Forks.
Homeowners commonly order gravel, sand, dirt, and stone for driveways, walkways, raised beds, and yard grading. These materials cover functions like surface topping, base layers, leveling, and planting mixes, so choose based on the project function (stability, drainage, or planting). Local sourcing means color and texture may vary, so check photos or ask for guidance when ordering.
Most orders have a minimum (Hello Gravel’s minimum is 3 tons) and standard delivery typically requires 2+ business days. Next-day delivery is often available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee, and delivery fees depend on distance and material type while many areas qualify for free delivery. Exact fees and lead times vary by supplier and zip code, so enter your address or contact the team to confirm.
Freeze–thaw and heavy snow can cause frost heave, surface settling, and increased compaction for fine materials, and can cause clogging in drainage areas. Using well-draining, stable aggregates for bases and ensuring proper grading reduces frost-related movement and pooling. Plan for winter maintenance and expect seasonal performance differences that may require periodic top-ups or regrading.
For drainage and erosion control, coarser, well-draining aggregates used in layered applications perform best, often combined with geotextile fabric and proper grading. Vegetation, retaining features, or berms combined with rock and stone can slow runoff and stabilize slopes. Choose materials based on slope, soil type, and the amount of runoff expected, and consult local guidance for cold-climate best practices.
The best time is late spring through early fall when the ground is thawed and weather is more predictable, which helps with installation and reduces weather-related delays. Avoid scheduling major deliveries during heavy winter months when frozen ground and snow can limit access and compaction work. If you must work in shoulder seasons, order early and build in extra days for possible weather interruptions.
Many regional suppliers, including those in the Fargo metro area, deliver across regional distances, but availability and fees depend on supplier coverage and haul distance. Surcharges are sometimes applied for long-haul deliveries or for materials sourced outside the immediate area, and regional sourcing means material appearance may differ. Enter your zip code at checkout or contact our team to confirm supplier availability and any additional charges.
Measure the area (square feet) and decide the depth (inches), then calculate cubic yards with: cubic yards = (area in sq ft * depth in feet) / 27. Convert cubic yards to tons using a typical range (about 1.2 to 1.7 tons per cubic yard depending on material); use our material calculator for precise numbers and always add 5-10% for waste and compaction. For example, a 1,000 sq ft area at 2 inches depth is about 6.2 cubic yards, roughly 7.5 to 10.5 tons depending on the material.
Material-only costs mostly depend on the type of material and quantity, plus delivery; Hello Gravel offers transparent pricing and will show delivery fees based on your zip code. Installed projects add labor, site prep, and equipment costs, so total project prices can range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars depending on size and complexity. Get a material quote and compare local installer bids to budget accurately.
Contact our customer service as soon as possible—changes are easier before the order is processed or dispatched and we will do our best to accommodate requests. Because materials are regionally sourced, color and texture can vary; if the delivered material is different than expected, reach out right away so we can document the issue and work toward a solution. Review our delivery and refund guidance for next steps and available options.
