Why Huntsville Homeowners Choose Hello Gravel
Huntsville has a small but growing homeowner market, with a city population of 2,600 and an annual growth rate of 2.10% that is driving steady demand for residential grading and foundation work. Located in a warm hardiness zone (8b) with 228/year sunny days and 34.32 inches of annual rainfall, local properties often need reliable soil and grading solutions to manage drainage, prevent settling, and prepare building pads for landscaping or small additions. Homeowners in this climate look for consistent, low-organic fill-dirt that compacts well and supports proper grading so lawns, driveways, and foundations sit on stable material rather than soft, variable native soil. Fill-dirt is a practical choice for Huntsville projects because it replaces low-value, organic topsoil with denser, compactable material that resists erosion during heavy rain events and performs well under the area’s sunny, warm conditions. Hello Gravel connects you with local suppliers and professional haulers who source regionally appropriate fill-dirt, provide clear pricing, and schedule deliveries to fit your project. Our platform helps you calculate quantities, choose screened or clean fill options, and arrange delivery—minimum orders typically start at 3 tons—with optional tailgate spreading at the driver’s discretion.Popular Projects in Huntsville This Season

Frequently Asked Questions - Huntsville Fill Dirt Delivery
Everything you need to know about fill dirt delivery in Huntsville.
Costs in Huntsville vary by supplier, delivery distance, and seasonal demand, but expect a rough range of $15 to $45 per ton (or about $20 to $60 per cubic yard) for basic fill-dirt delivered. Final price depends on haul distance up canyon, truck access, and any extra services like spreading or dumping on steep lots. The most reliable way to know is to get a local quote through Hello Gravel for your zip code and delivery address.
Plan on about 1.2 to 1.5 tons of fill-dirt per cubic yard delivered when accounting for moisture and compaction. Examples: filling a 4 ft x 4 ft low spot to 6 inches needs roughly 0.3 cubic yards (about 0.4 tons). A small driveway patch 20 ft x 10 ft at 6 inches requires about 3.7 cubic yards, or roughly 4.5 to 5.5 tons. Remember Hello Gravel has a material calculator to help convert your dimensions into tons.
Hello Gravel connects you with local suppliers and contracted haulers who deliver by dump truck; many local landscapers and excavators also offer spreading and compaction. Tailgate spreading can sometimes be requested at checkout but is done at the driver’s discretion; full grading and mechanical compaction are usually billed separately by contractors. Typical contractor rates for spreading and compaction vary widely by job size, but homeowners in the area should expect to pay from about $100 to several hundred dollars for a small job, with larger jobs quoted by the contractor.
Fill-dirt is generally not the best choice as a final driveway surface or sole under-slab base because it often contains fines and organic material that hold water and can heave during freeze-thaw cycles. For driveways and under-slab work in Huntsville’s snowy, freeze-prone climate, use an engineered granular base (crusher-run, road base, or compacted gravel) with proper compaction and drainage. If you must use fill-dirt for grading or raising elevations, keep it below the structural base and ensure good drainage and compaction per builder recommendations.
Fill-dirt is economical for raising grade or filling low spots but has poorer load-bearing and drainage characteristics than crusher-run or road base. Crusher-run and road base are crushed, angular materials designed to compact tightly and shed water, making them better for driveways and under slabs. Clean fill (screened, low-organic soil) is better for landscaping beds and under lawn areas where you want fewer organics and less settlement than typical fill-dirt.
Permitting rules vary and can depend on project scale and whether the work affects drainage, setbacks, or foundation-bearing soils. Small landscaping fills are usually allowed, but significant changes to grade, retaining walls, or fill that supports structures often require a permit or engineering review from the City of Huntsville or Weber County. Contact Huntsville City Hall or Weber County Building Division before moving large volumes to confirm permit requirements.
For structural fills, place fill-dirt in lifts of 4 to 6 inches and mechanically compact each lift to around 90% of the standard Proctor density (check with your engineer). For non-structural landscape fills, looser lifts up to 6 to 12 inches may be acceptable but expect some settlement. On slopes, add erosion control (seed, mulch, or geotextile) and consider terracing or using geogrid for long-term stability in snowy, wet conditions.
As a driveway base, untreated fill-dirt typically performs poorly and can show rutting and settlement within a few seasons, especially with freeze-thaw cycles and wet conditions. Properly compacted fill-dirt used only for grading or under a proper granular base can remain stable for many years. For landscaping, well-compacted fill-dirt with good drainage will generally last, but some settling over the first 1 to 3 years is common and should be planned for.
Many local contractors and excavators in the West Utah area do offer compaction and grading as part of their services, but material delivery quotes from Hello Gravel typically cover only the material and hauling. If you need compaction or grading, request that service when getting a quote so we can coordinate with suppliers and haulers or recommend local contractors. Tailgate spreading by drivers is sometimes possible but is not guaranteed and is performed at the driver’s discretion.
Yes. Winter weather, canyon road restrictions, and occasional quarry or pit closures can limit delivery windows and raise hauling costs in the Huntsville area. Prices and lead times can increase in winter due to slower hauling conditions and higher demand for material and contractor time. We recommend scheduling deliveries in advance for winter months and checking availability when you request a quote.
As of today, we require 2 business days for delivery.
