Why North Salt Lake Homeowners Choose Hello Gravel
North Salt Lake has a city population of 20,020 and sits within a metro area of 2.5+ million, growing at a rate of 2.10% annually. With 228 sunny days per year, 34.32 inches of annual rainfall, and placement in USDA hardiness zone 8b, the local climate supports active outdoor projects and steady residential growth. That steady growth and favorable weather patterns mean homeowners are frequently regrading yards, building up pads for sheds and patios, and preparing landscape beds. For these jobs, quality fill-dirt matters: it provides a compactable, low-organic base that minimizes future settling, improves drainage where needed, and gives contractors and DIYers a predictable substrate to work from. In North Salt Lake’s mix of sun and seasonal precipitation, properly sourced fill-dirt is especially practical—well-graded, low-organic material compacts consistently in dry periods and resists washout during heavier rains. Use it for raising grades, backfilling foundations, building driveway approaches, or creating uniform planting beds before adding topsoil. Hello Gravel connects you with local suppliers and haulers who source fill-dirt matched to regional soils, show transparent pricing, and coordinate delivery to fit project timelines. Standard delivery is offered in 2+ business days, and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST; drivers may offer tailgate spreading at their discretion.Popular Projects in North Salt Lake This Season

Frequently Asked Questions - North Salt Lake Fill Dirt Delivery
Everything you need to know about fill dirt delivery in North Salt Lake.
Delivered fill-dirt prices in North Salt Lake commonly range by volume and source, but a typical ballpark is about $12 to $35 per ton delivered depending on haul distance, truck access, and moisture. Hello Gravel shows exact local pricing for your ZIP code and has a 3-ton minimum; request a quote to see current rates and any delivery fees.
Hello Gravel partners with local quarries, landscape supply yards, and aggregate haulers that service the North Salt Lake area and will show available suppliers during checkout. For installation, local landscape contractors and grading companies in Salt Lake County handle placement and compaction; ask Hello Gravel for supplier names and contractor referrals in your zip code.
Yes. North Salt Lake’s cold winters and spring runoff can leave soils wet or frozen, so the best months for placing and compacting fill-dirt are typically late spring through early fall. Avoid placing large fills on saturated or frozen ground, and schedule deliveries during drier periods to ensure proper compaction and reduce settlement risk.
For most residential work, use clean, non-organic fill placed in 6- to 8-inch lifts and compacted to the project’s specified density; contractors often aim for 90% to 95% of Standard/Modified Proctor depending on local code and soil type. For driveways, a compacted fill-dirt subgrade topped with 4–6 inches of crushed rock provides better drainage; for building pads always follow a geotechnical engineer or city requirements for gradation and compaction.
Use this quick formula: cubic yards = (square feet × depth in inches) / 324. For 1,000 sq ft at 6 inches that equals about 18.5 cubic yards, which converts to roughly 22–28 tons of fill-dirt in North Salt Lake depending on moisture and material density (we recommend ordering a small extra allowance for compaction and settlement).
Large grading or fill projects may trigger local permits or inspections, especially if they change site drainage or exceed volume thresholds, so contact the North Salt Lake Building Department or Salt Lake County Planning before major fills. For structural fills or near foundations, the city often requires engineered plans and geotechnical testing—hire a geotech or check city permitting guidance early in your project.
Areas near the Great Salt Lake can have higher salt or alkali levels and a higher water table, which can affect soil chemistry and drainage; untreated fill-dirt with fines or salts may harm plantings or corrode buried materials. For properties near the lake, request low-salt or washed fill and plan for extra drainage measures (underdrains, slope grading) and consider soil testing to confirm suitability.
Contractors typically place fill-dirt in 6–8 inch lifts and compact each lift with appropriate equipment—plate compactors for small areas and vibratory rollers or rammers for larger jobs—with roughly 4–8 passes per lift depending on soil type. Production rates vary by access and equipment, but a small crew might place and compact 20–100 cubic yards per day; expect tri-axle trucks (12–18 tons) to unload every 15–45 minutes during active placement.
Fill-dirt is usually the lowest-cost option per ton and fine for non-structural grade builds or raising lawn areas, but it can settle and retain moisture, leading to future grading or drainage work. Crushed rock or engineered fill costs more upfront but gives better drainage, load-bearing capacity, and long-term stability—so for driveways, pads, or areas near the Great Salt Lake, engineered fill or rock is often the smarter long-term choice.
Most suppliers and haulers offer delivery quality terms at the time of drop off (quantity and visible condition) but rarely provide long-term warranties on natural fill-dirt because settlement and performance depend on placement and compaction. Hello Gravel recommends inspecting material at delivery, documenting any issues, and contacting customer service promptly so we can work with the supplier on resolution per our issue process.
